Heil Furnace - Filter

I am 2 months into my first time home buying experience. So far, so good. That is, except for one little problem. The furnace. It runs fine, knock on wood. The problem is that when it comes to changing the filter I can not access the filter. The way that it is positioned inside of the closet, when I remove the access panel there is a pipe (out-going gasses? is assume) that prevents access to the filter.

Any ideas? I'm not really comfortable removing this pipe that leads up to the flue pipe. Is there a flexible filter product that I could shimmy up there and support with a bracket? Just got all of the vents cleaned in the home, don't want to dirty them back up.

Thanks!
