Heating source...heat pump or gas?

If all costs are equal to install and run which would you prefer for YOUR home?

Some background...my home is northwest of Philadelphia. It's a 1700 sq ft split level with gas currently.

Because of ability to vent sideways I would need the vent to run vertically along the chimney. There is already a 2x2 shoot there to the attic.

Also, what brands do you recommend/not recommend?

Definitely not 80% gas. You really need to run the operational cost numbers using the gas and electric rates in your area. If you currently have gas heat it is possible you will need larger ductwork for a heat pump so that adds more upfront cost.

I'd say calculate the operational costs of each, then get bids on installation and crunch the numbers.

Myself I would love to go geothermal.

Couldn't agree more. If it's installed when the home is built. Then you don't have to worry about duct size. It'll be calculated custom to the system going in.
