Heating duct work in attic or crawl space?

Hi Everyone,

Please help me determine where we should put our new heating duct work. Our house is a single story house (1400 sf) built in the 1950's. We are located about 30 min south of San Francisco. The house currently have no AC, only gas furnace for heating during winter. The attic gets pretty hot during the summer. The crawl space is neither insulated nor sealed, only a layer of plastic sheet on the soil preventing moisture from seeping up. The crawl space also have very low clearance, about 12" to 16". The living room and kitchen will have new vaulted ceiling which eliminates the attic above.

The contractor recommended duct-work in the crawl space under living room/kitchen, while in the attic above bedroom/bathroom. Not sure if that's the best way since I understand "hot air rises; cold air falls". But the attic is also warmer than the crawl space in the winter, so that might mean greater energy efficiency for a heating system.

What is your take on the location of heating duct work?

The crawlspace will have less extremes in temperature but 12 to 16" is too tight of a space to work in.

My house has vaulted ceilings upstairs and insulated flex ducts that branch off to registers in the ceilings of each room from a plenum in the accessible central part of the attic. Works fine here in MD. Maybe another option for you....

Sounds more like a job to figure out WHERE we can put it as apposed to the most energy efficient place.
