Heating and Cooling unit
I am looking for a unit that can cool and heat my 20x24 workshop. I was thinking in terms of a unit like hotel rooms have. Also, here is one I am looking at.
Does anyone know anything about these types of ductless systems??
Ductless splits, and PTACs are ok.
That portable unit isn't what you want.
Most ductless units, only heat at outdoor temps above 14°, some as cold as 0°.
Got to be carefull with them.
MiniSplit Heat pump
I installed a Friedrich minisplit heat pump in a new 17'x 14' sunroom (atlanta). It does a great job of AC in summer and heats well - so far down to 20F or so. These don't heat if the temp. gets too low as note be previous poster - but I haven't had that problem yet. Purchased the 1.5 ton unit for ~ $1,500 3 years ago on the internet. Installed myself - except final refrigerant line hook ups. This size would probablly be fine for your shop. I've been quite happy with the performance. It has a remote control - to change settings. Some of these come with an auxillary resistance heater for very cold climates.
I have two units heating my 1200 sq.ft. house, a 9000 and 12000 - but also have a wood burner when it gets real cold.
800 square feet would probably need an 18,000 btu unit, you don't say where you're located or the minimum/maximum temperatures in your area or what kind of heat/cool load would be normal (machines running etc), but heat pumps are generally rated for a minimum of 20 degrees F (40 is optimal low end), they can be 2 to 3 times more efficient than electric but that number drops with the outside temperature to where electric may be cheaper.
This is speculative and dependent on many factors but in an ideal situation your heating needs would be equivalent to three 1500 watt electric heaters, at 10 cent per kilowatt that would cost you approximately 50 cents an hour to run where as a heat pump may only cost you 25.
Note: I see that the unit you gave a link to is only good down to 29 degrees
