Heating/ AC unit

Over the summer my A/C unit went down. The compressor will come on for about 15-20 seconds and shut back off. I tried trouble shooting it myself checking switches, relays, fuses, and wires, but could not find the problem. I call a local repair company and was told I had a bad compressor. Because the repair was going to be costly I decided to wait. Now that cooler weather is here we are running the heater and I have noticed the furnace is doing the same thing. Could this still be do to a bad compressor?

if it is a heat pump the compressor runs the same in cooling/heating mode.the 3-way valve is the stat call for what air handler sees in temperatures.if it is a gas fired furnace there is no connection between them only the 24Vs and the stat
