heat wont come on with t-stat in auto

fan wont come on when t-stat on "auto" and in heat, but it does in cool. Unit will heat a little when t-stat fan switch "on". Have heard that the a/c compressor runs backwards for heat. Does not engage in heat.
The electric elements under fan do heat up.

I have an Intertherm a/c-heat pump unit.

Please help

Hi wahanks

Very seldom does a thermotat need to be replaced, but in your case it sounds like either the cooling anticipator is going out or the subbase is bad. Either way from your description you need a new thermostat. The ones I would reccomend to replace with are White Rogers 1F82-261 for programmable or 1F89-211 for a non programmable. Let us know if we can help further.

Good luck
Rusty

We have a white rogers thermostat , there is no unit outside, so it is just for heating in our mobile home. It registers temp inside the house, but when we put it on heat & on auto the heat does not kick on & we're pretty sure the wires are hooked up right. What could be the reason for this? Someone able to help?

lakotasioxwolf, Man I haven't been on her for years, kind of nice to come back. You have kind of a loaded problem here. Mobile home furnaces until the 90's were a breed of their own in the way they worked. You could not use a standard thermostat on them. However if your furnace is a DGAT or a DGAA, you can use just about any heat/cool thermostat on it. If yours is one of the last mentioned, all you have to do is touch the two wires together at the thermostat and see if it comes on in heat. If it does change the thermostat. If it doesn't however, the DGAA and the DGAT are little work horses and very seldom have a problem. The most common failure of these furnaces are the induce draft assembly. Most inexperienced technicians will put two or three boards in these furnaces and have multiple callbacks before coming to the proper conclusion. You got the information for free. Let me know the model of the furnace you are working with and I will help you solve it.
