heat pump wiring problems

I am trying to figure out my thermostat wiring. I have a goodman heat pump with heat strips, package unit. The problem is that anytime the unit is running, heating or cooliing the heat strip is activated.
I belive I see the problem, and think it is the jumper between the w and y terminals.

I have always just turned the heat strip off at breaker unless the heat pump couldnt keep up, and then turned on so no big deal, but now we are selling house and I want it to be correct.

Can anyone tell by my pics what the problem is for sure and if it looks right or not.

The wires connecting inside the heat pump unit are all color matched, and I belive some are more than 2 wires togather. If I need to will take pic and post as well.

Thanks for any help/suggestions.http://www.wilcomfonts.com/wp-conten...G_5297_1_1.jpghttp://www.wilcomfonts.com/wp-conten...G_5296_1_2.jpg

yes, that jumper should not be there if the white wire is wired to W in the HP.

looks like a tstat not made for heat pump with aux heat backup. Is your heating bill high? the way its wired heat pump and electric heat would run at the same time.

thanks...i have added pic of outside wiring now...there is a brown also in with the white....is that correct still for pulling the jumper between w and y..

maybe, what is the model number of the thermostat?

zskyman 07-24-2012 07:21 PM

thermostat is a rite temp 6010 it looks like...

leave the jumper but move the white wire to w2 or disconnect at both ends.

zskyman 07-24-2012 07:32 PM

what about the brown that is there now...remove or leave and move white wire to w2 also.

one last thing...the blue wire...that is the common wire and stays on c...right.

hvactech126 07-24-2012 07:38 PM

Leave brown and connect white also to W2. Yes, blue stays on C.

ok...made the changes...but heat strip still seems active even on ac...meter is spinning fast....but when turn off heat strip at breaker it slows back down...so it is still active.

then you have a bad stat and it is sending a signal on W2 during a call for cooling. You should only have the jumper on W and no other wires. Post a picture of the new wiring.

See page 10 of the PDF for wiring illustration.

i was looking at page 17...heat pump with auxillary heat...but seems to be right according to that..just obviously not right if heat strip run while ac is running..

sorry to be so much trouble...its just driving me nuts trying to figure it out.

Remove wires from w2 and test. If it works w/o strip heaters then it is the stat.
