I was looking at geothermal vrs Electric...then I read about regular heat pumps. The regular pumps did not seem to be in the working range for our Manitoba winter temps, confirmed by this thread.

Seems that my initial instinct of a Geothermal pump is the right way to go.

Now to get some quotes from reputable dealers on an install.

ptarmigan61 - I am not sure how to Private Message on these boards, but I wouldn't mind finding out who you used for your install. I know there are a lot of companies popping up that do Geotheramal installs and I would rather see a solid history on a company before I made that kind of investment.

Where exactly do you live? Frontier Refrigeration at the North Perimeter and McPhillips is a LONG term company (0ver 25 yrs) and I think they do a lot of geos. Check with the BBB as I don't know about the quality of their work but from my experience any HVAC company that is doing refrigeration and been in biz for over 25 yrs in Wpg is doing reputable work. The hackers disappear before year 5 and you get what you pay for.

Don't live there quite yet...but offer is accepted, bank just needs to do their thing and I am good to go.
The property is about 10 minutes from the North Perimeter.

I will check these guys out, and good call on the BBB. Didn't cross my mind.

Going to get a few quotes of course and see who says what.

Cheers!

I would SERIOUSLY consider them if they have no complaints against them even if they are $2000 more. Geos are VERY complicated and are primarily a high tech refrigeration unit not a simple AC. They have Journeyman refrigeration guys which are rare in anything but Commercial work so they definitely can service it properly but they don't come cheap. Most Journeymen make well over $30/hr here. The rest of the so called Geo companies can be in it for a quick buck while they are still trendy. We have 98.2% efficient furnaces for 25% of a Geo so it is going to give them a rough ride IMO and the market may drop for them due to the high upfront cost. That may drive the quick buckers out quickly and you will have no service or warranty.

We used Winnipeg Geothermal. They were on Manitoba Hydro's list of approved contractors for those getting a hydro loan for the work. (We got the loan) They did a good job, and have been available for questions and maintenance inspections. We had the install done in 2004, and they are still around.
Frontier may be good now, but I had a terrible experience with them in the late 80s. I had them doing commercial work on my A/C units, refigeration units, and ice machines. Some of the work was incompetently done, they wouldn't warrantee some of their substandard work, and cost us a lot of money on uneccessary bills. For example, in one case they kept replacing 20 ton A/C compressors (at a pretty penny each time) in one of the units without ever diagnosing and fixing the problem that caused the compressor failure in the first place. They were pretty stroppy and acted like bullies when I fired them too, which told me a lot about their business philosophy. (They actually told me I couldn't fire them.)

I wonder if it is the same owner now as then. LOTS of those refrig companies have been sold and have new ownership. They moved to the north perimeter less than 10 yrs ago. I guess our poster should try find that info. Same owner maybe stay away, new owners and good BBB record then may be okay IMO.

I agree...they shouldn't necessarily be punished for events of years ago, but it is worth checking out.

There's a company just south of Winnipeg called Southern Comfort who are doing a lot of Geothermal work. (they have been around at least 10 years). I know they also have a good reputation and are selling Waterfurnace equipment (which seems to be the front runner in geothermal in this area). I have worked on some of Waterfurnace's equipment and found it to be quite good. I don't do geothermal as it takes a fair bit of tooling which I don't want to purchase, and I am busy enough with my current customer base an hour west of Winnipeg. But I have heard good things about Southern Comfort.
