Heat pump heat strip has power when hot leads are disconnected?
I have a lemon of a heat pump. I didn't install it, but I don't have the funds to replace it either.

I've replaced four heat strips in the last six years. The last one has lasted less than one year. I went to look at it to verify that it was burnt through like it usually is. Put it back together and was ready to call the HVAC guy out, when I heard a buzzing noise that wasn't there earlier. I also noticed that one of heat heat strips was glowing.

Disconnected power again to take it back apart. Looked the same. Turned power back on and it still buzzed. Turned off power and disconnected the hot leads, thinking it was shorting out somewhere. Turned the power back on. STILL buzzing.

Any idea where this is being backfed from?

a relay? you are going to have to be more specific in your description. Where did you disconnect the "hot leads" from? Can you post some pictures?

I disconnected the hot wires going to the heat strip. I'll try and take some pictures later.

Sounds like your contactor is either stuck in or getting a call to come in. This is probably why you are burning so many heating strips out.

Sequencer? Did you try that, did you unhook all wires to all three? This is a 15kw right

No, an 9.5kw. It's about 20 years old I guess. Affectionately known as "Frankenstein." Why "Frankensein?" It's been cobbled together so bad because parts are hard to find. Hopefully tomorrow, I'll have a chance to do some more digging into it.
