Heat Pump Crisis Part II

Electric/Aux heat not working with new stat. Heat is working normal in heating mode, cool is working in cool.

There is a brown wire coming from the D terminal of the defrost board connect to the white wire which is connected to W2 in stat. On call for heat the Y (cool) and B (reversing valve) terminals energize to bring on heat, the norm.

There is an L terminal in stat which I have no idea what it is. No terminal specifying aux or emer heat.

There is a common hoOked up in stat as well, hooked to heat pump.

Old stat with wires in place. The black wire on the very right is on terminal L and of course not hooked up at the heat pump. I have no idea what that is but with this old stat the emergency heat was working, wired as such. The brown wire on the lower right is on terminal E. New stat does not have terminal E but to the very right side of furthest terminal on the right which is labeled L on new stat, has E3 printed.??

Above terminals and wire color:
O-orange wire
R-red wire
G-green wire
E-brown wire (not hooked up at heat pump)
L-black wire (not hooked up at heat pump)
C-light blue wire
W2-white wire
Y-yellow wire
Now I'm not certain at all how emergency heat was working or actually if at all it was.

New stat. Not that it has anything to do with my current (mis)wiring dilema but note the O/B switch.

To the very right is labeled E3.

Sorry for the blurry pics and thanks.

I went to my sisters place just now to look at her hp wiring. W2 to hp with no E or L hooked at all. This Ruud hp doesn't have a w2.??

When I had the honeywell stat with my Rheem, the L terminal connected to the wire (purple I think) on the Rheem for trouble codes. W2 was for back up heat.

L terminal is always a trouble indicator.

W2 is your only strip heat connection on that stat.

Are you telling me that the 2/1 heat pump stat is not compatible with the Ruud Heat Pump that apparently DOES NOT have a W2 terminal?

My sister's old Payne heat pump defrost board has the W2 terminal which hooks to the W2 on the W2 stat. On her stat is an E and an L terminal but nothing hooked to it. I turned on EMERGENCY HEAT and it worked, all elecrtic without heat pump.
Her heat pump board has a W2 terminal on the defrost board so that is a no brainer as it connects to W2 at the stat but the Ruud HP that I'm having trouble with has NO W2 terminal on defrost board. ??????

What in the hell am I supposed to do?

My sister's heat pump defrost board. White wire on W2 is at W2 in stat.

Problem is there is no W2 terminal on new Ruud defrost board..

Are you working on a package unit, or a split system?

If split, what terminals does the air handler have?

D is backup heat during defrost. It should be attached to your air handler W or W2 wire. Did you read the schematic on the outdoor unit to determine what D was to be hooked to?

STAT = AH = HP

R = R = R
C = C = C
B = -- = B
G = G = --
Y = Y = Y
W2 = W2 = D

Are you installing this as a NEW system? Did you read the installation manual for the HP? Is it a matched system? Honestly, if you came to my home and had NO idea how to wire it up, you would have been booted out the door!

I did not install this system. Service call via home warranty, no heat. I went yesterday and installed a new what I was told by supply house was programmable but turned out to be NON programmable stat. Going back tomorrow with correct programmable stat.

Thanks guys.

Sister's Payne Heat pump, wired straight through. No terminals in air handler, wires. W2 white at heat pump plug.

Wired in the air handler.

And the stat. Her's was and is very self explanatory.

The white wire of the air handler takes place of terminals. So its wire to a white wire, that is the electric heat wire for the air handler.
