Heat pump compressor turning off and not starting sporadically

Hey all, this is going to be my first post.

I have a small townhome built in 1982, it has the original GE heatpump, it's been great, reliable, and efficient during the 6 years I've lived here. Many of the houses in my neighborhood still have the original systems.

As the title states, lately the compressor outside won't come on when the thermostat tells it to, I have a newer honeywell digital thermostat I installed in 2008.

I've never had this happen before, I have replaced the batteries in the thermostat and reset it, taken it off and reseated, and reset the circuit breaker on the air handler and the compressor, last week after a bit it would just start working randomly, today, I can't get it to come on at all.

I can hear the audible 'click' in the thermostat turning the compressor on, it turns the air handler's blower on and off properly, but the compressor won't turn on.

I have never had a problem with this unit, no leaks, nothing.

I really cannot afford to replace right now, unless I finance it, I'm drowning in medical bills due to an accident that also happened in the last month, so yea, it's been a tough summer so far.

I have some calls into local HVAC contractors, but I'm sure they are going to recommend a new system, and I can't blame them, but maybe there is something simple I'm overlooking?

Thanks in advance!

You should install a start kit.

Does the outdoor fan motor come on as it should?

Could be something as simple and relatively inexpensive in the outdoor unit such as the contactor. Don't be afraid to let a pro check it out, and you may be suprised that they will understand your financial situation and help you find a way to keep it running until the time when a replacement makes better sense.
