Heat pump auxilary heat

I have a Carrier heat pump about 8 years old. I checked the amperage draw and it was 30 amps taken with an ampmeter around one of the hot wires. This reading was taken at the disconnect on the inside blower assembly. When the heat pump is running and the thermostat is not showing active auxilary heat, there is no reading. This is a split unit and a separate power supply goes to outside. Im I correct in assuming that at this stage of operation, it is not pulling much more current then my 4K watt portable heater?
