Heat Pump
I just bought a house for my daughter and it has a heat pump system in it. The house had been setting for a couple years when I bought it, it is around 2,000 Sq ft. Not sure if it is working properly we just got our first heat bill and it was over 500.00 which I thought was an awful lot. The house is insulated well could anyone give me insight on what may be happening. And things I:( might be looking for to see what is causing the high electric bills. Thanks for any help in this matter.

What have the outside temperatures been like where she lives in the last month? Does she have emergency electric coil backup heat? That can be very expensive.

Make sure the emergency heat is not coming on automatically at night. Some thermostats are programmed so that it comes on when the temp falls only 3 degrees below the setting.

You need a Honeywell VisionPro 8000 thermostat with outdoor sensor so you can lock those heat strips out at milder temperatures.

What area are you located in? Possibly someone on this board is in her area and can help her out.

Probably a good idea to call a pro out on the one. Could be a host of things going on that cause the strips to run too much and your daughter isn't going to know how to check any of them. Should be less then a fifth of that electric bill to get the system diagnosed.

Have you'her been setting the temp back at night, and then up again in the morning. And then setting it back while at work and then back up when home? If so, this will raise your heating bill when you have a heat pump with electric aux heat.

Check the refrigerant charge...the unit may be on emergency heat all the time if the charge is low or gone due to a leak. I've seen it happen when the evaporator coil develops a small leak.
