Heat not working and it's freezing outside

I live in Orlando and the temperature right now is 32. My heat pump just stopped. The outside unit is not working but the air handler is still blowing air. I have a Carrier HVA system. Please help.

1st thing to check is the power. You may have popped a breaker or fuse.

Assuming you have a backup heat source turn the thermostat to emergancy heat for now. Tomorrow when it's light out check the heat pump

A heat pump extracting heat from the outside air won't function at 32F and electric heaters are usually switched on to supplement the pump.
If your system doesn't have auxiliary heaters, you had better buy some portable heaters.

Only true if there's an outdoor stat set to 32 and locking the HP out. Heat pumps work well below freezing. Single digit temps and they need help but not at 30.

Got some heat pumps here. that at 20F outdoor temp, they are still keeping the house at 70.
Their aux heat is a gas furnace. And the gas furnace does not run with the heat pump.

It's 24 degrees here right now and my heat pumps are working fine. I believe they're rated down to 17 degrees.

How low do they go beenthere 0? -10? Mine can only keep up till it's 9 out but we need more attic insulation.

You're right. The capacities are specified at 17 degrees, but the minimum operating temp is 14 dry bulb, 12 wet bulb.

Heating at 17F*
Rated Capacity (Non-ducted/Ducted) . 19,400 Btu/h / 20,300 Btu/h
Total Input (Non-ducted/Ducted) . 2,330 W / 2,340 W

Yours may only be able to maintain your house temp down to 9.

But at 0F, it still provides heat at a cheaper per BTU cost, then the strip heaters do.

So if it drops to 0 outside. Your heat pump will still provide heat for less then what just the electric heater will. And it ends up saving you money on your heating bill.

EG:
At 0F outdoor temp. Your heat pump may only provide 10,000BTUs. But it does so at a KW usage of 1.95

Your strip heaters to provide the same amount will use 2.93KWs.

So if your house were to need 20,000BTUs at 0 F outdoor temp. Using both the heat pump and strip heaters, and having the stat set up not to cycle the heat pump off. You would use 4.88KWs.
Using just the strip heaters you would use 5.86KWs.

While that may only be .98KW less. thats .98 KWs less per hour.
Over a single night period. That can add up to 11 KWs.

My backup is gas so the hp doesn't run when it's on, except defrost cycle. Electric backup we let the hp run with the strips like you wrote. Was -23 this morning . Forcast calls for normal 20's and 30's next week so will have cheap heat again soon.

Wow! Things have inproved with H/Ps these days! Are we talking about air exchangers with these figures.
Heat extracted from water or the ground is more cost effective!

I doubt that all these figures will impress someone who is freezing to death.
The immediate problem is what to do about it! If the H/P is an older, less efficient unit that isn't designed to work below 32F heat from another source will be required!

Air to air heat pumps.

Even 30 year old heat pumps were able to provide heat at outdoor temps below 32F. They required a secondary source of heat to maintain the stats set temp(as many still do today). But, they were still bringing in more heat, then what they used in electric.

The Ops unit. May have gone into defrost.
Or it may have developed a problem.
He can switch to emergency heat, if he has any.

And or, test for what is wrong.
