Heat does not come on unless I reset thermostat. What the heck

I've been trying to figure this out:

Furnace will not come on (intermittently, but typically not) for the morning cycle. If I go to the thermostat and turn the system OFF and wait for the "click" then to "Heat" and wait for the click, the furnace will fire up fine.

During the day, everything seems to work fine.

I've switched to another thermostat JUST IN CASE, but it's pretty much the same result.

The AC worked fine all summer. Hmmm.

Thanks.

I realize that's not a lot of info, but I'm at work and did not bring the info with me.
