Goodman heat pump very fast cycling

I have a Goodman CPRT36-T heat pump and it seems to be either turning on and off very fast or continually trying to start. I hear a noise every 10 - 15 seconds and as that happens my house lights dim just as if the unit kicks on.

I left the system off last night for over 12 hours and the problem continues this morning. I could feel heat in the house this morning when I tested the system, but didn't leave it on long enough to see if it would get to the temp set on the thermostat.

Please help...
Thanks

there are a number of things that could cause this. Most likely would be the capacitor is bad or you have a burnt up wire.

Is there any way a non-technician like myself could check the capicator?

Thanks to everyone, the tech checked it today and found the compressor to be defective.

Weird thing with Goodman, the manufacturer.... the tech called his office and they called Goodman and they said the unit was out of warranty based on the serial which starts yymm. My serial is 0602, and the paperwork says, when in doubt about the installation date, "the warranty period starts three months AFTER the manufacture date"

They tried to disallow my coil warranty repair last year even though I had documentation and a paid credit card receipt! Not to mention that the replacement coil came to my home DEFECTIVE, and had to call the techs out a week later to repair a defective schrader valve. I took weeks, threats and I had to sign a disclaimer to get the money back for the techs time to repair there defective coil!

welcome to the world of goodman. Your compressor very well may be shot, but from the description you gave, I am a bit doubtful. Compressors are very often misdiagnosed. You may want a 2nd opinion.

goodman has the highest part failure of any equipment out there! So they seem to find a way not to honor the warranty!

Round up some proof of the installation date. The city will have a permit and inspection date on file. The Installing company will also have record of when it was put in. I've never had problems getting Goodman warranty parts through the local distributor.

I dont believe it is a distributor issue as much as a contractor issue

The technician came out today to replace the compressor under warranty and after 6 hours, he explained...

The compressor has been swapped out and was bad, but it appears that something else is also bad, maybe the reversing valve. But that would mean another $1000 to repair under warranty.

Should he have been able to diagnose that before saying the compressor was bad and replacing it?

He could not have diagnosed a bad reversing valve if the compressor didn't run. Same with all the rest of the componets in the refrigerant circuit, if it doesn't run there's no crystal ball to say xy and z are also bad.

Yea if the compressor was bad then there was no way in knowing the reversing valve was bad. That's why you should just replace the reversing valve as well already will have the gas and compressor out.

Its odd if you said it would run for a little and shut off. To me it seems like the reversing valve was the problem from the start. Compressor was coming on, rv was stuck and chances are you where getting hot gas back to the compressor and it was overheating and shutting down.

as I said earlier, should have gotten a second opinion.........not to beat a dead horse........... I think you got took by this contractor, but I can't say that for sure without having seen the system b4 the new compressor was installed.

Question..... Does the compressor still do what it did before with trying to start every 10 - 15 seconds?

Goodman uses some of same parts as other brands, motors, compressors, contactors, capicators, etc. I have had no more failed goodman parts than any other brands. I have never been truned down for warranty claim if the unit ( date code) was in the warranty period
