Goodman Heat Pump Making Clicking Noise

Hello everyone,

Today I noticed the indoor unit of my Goodman heat pump makes a clicking noise every 3-4 minutes. The unit is in heat mode and is not running when I hear the noise. The unit was installed in 2009 and this is the first time I've noticed this clicking noise. It sounds like something in the unit is clicking on, then clicks off after a few seconds. This happens every 3-4 minutes. Is there anything I can try or look at before I call a tech? It does not seem to be affecting the performance of the unit, as it will kick on when the temp drops. The noise is very noticeable; you can hear it through the vents.

Thanks for the advice.

Do you have electric auxiliary heater strips? Perhaps the heat is stuck on and cycling with the overheat limit switches. If you don't have an amp clamp take a look at you electric meter and see if it's speeding up and slowing down.

What zappa says.
You'll notice a higher than normal electric bill too.

Thanks guys. It does have auxiliary heat strips. I'll take a look at the electric meter to see if it speeds up when the clicking starts. It also makes a humming sound between the two clicks.

Just confirmed the electric meter does speed up quite a bit when I hear the clicking noise, and then slows back to normal when it clicks the second time. Is there anyway to disable this until I can get a tech out to look at it?

There are many easy ways to disable it but you need to be good with reading schematics and electrical work.

As an alternative you could flip the breaker off for the air handler and only turn it back on when you need heat.

Thanks zappa. I turned the unit off at the breaker. I am not comfortable messing with it (although I can read schematics.) I'll get the a tech out tomorrow hopefully. Do you think it is a faulty switch that is causing the issue?

Something is probably stuck closed, like a contactor or sequencer. Both could also be called switches.
