good hvac review site?
other than consumer reports, anyone have a recommendation for a free site that has reviews and comparisons on heaters and air conditioners?
One local contractor brought in a quote for "Ruud" which I'd never heard of before, not sure whats a good brand or what brand is really a re-badged xyz (like ford-mercury) brand. Would like to do some digging before laying out cash and only found a couple of comments here and there.
No reliable rating system for furnaces or A/Cs.
Ruud is a sister unit to Rheem. Different color and name, but same unit.
I have spent far too much time researching, trying to find ratings for central air. This is what I found! I believe it is from consumer reports.
Another thing I found is that home owner installed units required less service than professional install's, seems like that would be hard to prove. But it is on the internet so it must be true.
It seems to be commonly accepted among the pro's that the quality of installation is more important than brand.
I tried a back door search, I Googled central ac problems/complaints. The only thing I found there is a disproportionate number of complaints against Trane. Seems everything stops a Trane! Or maybe they just sell a lot more units??
So after hours of surfing, I will probably go with a Ruud Rheem. I have an 18 year old Ruud and it is still going strong:thumbup: The only reason I would go with another brand is if the tech is more comfortable working with another brand.
There are two things you stated that I absolutely agree with:
1. The quality of the install is more important then the brand
2. Go with the brand the contractor is most familiar with. (and the brand that he has the most clout with the distributer/manufacturer if there are issues)
Most brands use industry standard components like Emerson/Ranco/GE etc so the differences aren't all that greats. Rheem/Ruud is generally regarded as a pretty reliable "workhorse" brand.
