Default gas pack smell

I have a hiel gaspack that is 18yrs old, when I turned the heat on this year I got a musty mildew smell from my vents, (no smell from the ac we used it all summer, and have used the ac after trying the heat no smell) we have had a tremendous amount of rain this year maybe standing water caused this? My question is what do I need to clean and what with?
THANKS!
WW

You should get it checked by a professional. That musty smell may be fumes from the burner/cracked heat exchanger. Heils are bad for that. The ones of that age had riveted heat exchangers and fail a lot.

Yep. The air is going over the same componets in heating or cooling. Damp musty smell in heating sure sounds like combustion byproducts getting in your living space.

Default gas pack smell

THANKS guys! Of course this was not what I'd hoped to hear, I guess I'll start looking for heat alternatives!

If you live in the US there's a tax credit,up to $1500, for furnaces with a 95% AFUE. There's also manufacture's rebates on many units on top of that. Every little bit helps.
