gas hot water burner wont ignite on its own

My hot water started running out quickly. Then it was taking 2-3 days to warm up but wasn't even getting ver hot. I have found that the burner only seems to kick on if I turn the control knob all the way in the on position until the gas is coming out and hold it there for 30 seconds or more. I get good flames then and the water heats up.. i can't replace it right now but want to make sure its safe. And is there anything I can do to fix it cheaply?

Just replace it. They are not serviceable.
