Furnace won't kick on

I have a Trane furnance that won't kick on. The fan turns on and the pilot is lit, but the temp reads 4 degrees under what it is set at. Any ideas on the problems or solutions?

Could the problem be a result of a bad thermostat? I have been thinking of replacing it and I thought it that were possibly the case, I would save myself a service call.

Last year I had a customer with a similar problem. The house seemed cooler than what the thermostat registered. They called the furnace folks and the guy who came mentioned something about draining water out of some duct in the furnace. Maybe the HVAC guys have come across this. Apparently because of reno's going on in the basement (even though the room and return air was taped off) the dust affected this unit. Wish I could tell you more, or at least wish I had paid better attention.

Does the furnace light off at all? Or is it just a case of the thermostat not reaching the temperature you have it set for?...I assume the latter or else you whave not had heat at all in awhile. If it is the thermostat, is it a digital or statndard mercury bulb style?....You can calibrate the temperature sensor on a mercury bulb by adjusting the small screw on the back of the cover.....these are not real reliable, but you should be able to get it close enough.
If it isnt the themostat, then check and see if the furnace has any error codes on the board ( assuming you have a board in your furnace).
