Furnace troubleshooting

Today I had a furnace out, and I had an ignitor on hand. I went and replaced the ignitor and all was well.

I have had two other furnace calls this heating season. On one, I had to call a service company and they replaced some component and the blower fan, then they had to do something with the drain lines.

On the other service call, the service company replaced the thermostat and blower motor. I thought the blower motor was fine, as it was working when I checked it.

I can do a few things. I can check and make sure there is electricity to the furnace.

I can check to be sure there is gas to the furnace.

I can check the intake and exhaust and make sure they are open. Typically I will disconnect them to see if they are a problem (blocked outside)

I can check the drain tubes to be sure they are draining.

I can see if the ignitor is glowing.

Is there some training I can do to diagnose furnaces better?

Where is a good place to buy parts? I don't remember where I got the ignitor. I got two of them in about 2004 and one was left until now.

I will check out the book Yuri suggested.

As for buying parts, I'm just looking for a place with competitive prices and will sell to a diy.
