Furnace Questions

Thanx for the link CustomBuild, I'll check it out later. In my previous post it states: "I am told" regarding the insulation in the attic. My landlord informed me that the insulation is in fact shredded newspaper, no mistake. Shouldn't this stuff be replaced after 35 years??? Also, thanx for the throw rug tip, it's been suggested to me a few times. I'd need some really thick underlay & wall to wall berber to keep the cold out here, where it gets close to minus 50!!! And my pocketbook ain't that large!

Newspaper? Well you could hope your landlord is wrong. Maybe it has even been treated with fire retardant. Newspaper is great bedding for rodents and for starting fires.

A relatively inexpensive upgrade would be to install some weather stripping and door sweeps. That should help reduce infiltration and heat loss. A larger concern is: what is driving the infiltration (what is sucking the outside air inside)? Is there a fireplace that draws air from inside? Airflow from the house into the attic? A faulty furnace installation?

Common in cellulose insulation.

Thanx for the tip about the rodents & starting fires 'greengiant'!And 'beenthere' it was treated with fire retardant(well, probably 35 years ago). No fireplace, new front & back doors installed; one this year & one two years ago. Highly likely faulty furnace installation (no initials on inspection sticker!!!) or could possibly be airflow into attic. Next ???
