Did it every work correctly?

Did you install the thermostat yourself?

Did you buy a conbination heating and cooling thermostat and hook up the furnace control leads to the cooling terminals (turns on when the termperature goes up)?

sorry i don't know if it ever worked correctly, were just renting and the landlord isn't really smartthere fore thinks it works even when i explain its broken.... but hes nice so i don't wanna push him to repair it, i'd rather deal with it myself... it would be faster I'm sure

So if you burn the place down by doing work, as a renter, you want to be responsible?

It's his responsibility as a land lord! Have him call a qualified tech and make repairs that's why you pay rent?
