Furnace kicked off this morning...

My wife called me at work around 6:30 this morning saying that the house was 58*. She checked the fuel, and there was half a tank. I went home and checked the furnace and the light on it was flashing. According to the sticker, 1/2 second flashing = lockout. What does that mean?

It is an Ultra 80 oil fired forced air furnace, model 46646-001 (i think).

Check your inline filter, then replace your nozzle. That should fix it. If it fires then quits, check/replace the cad cell. Also on the back of your "gun" there is a cap that you can remove and inside there is another filter screen, if that is plugged it will also prevent fuel flow and hence no fire. Inline filter first, nozzle, that screen, cad cell in that order is most common things.

I know the problem and it can have several solutions. One was a small amount of water collected in the line and froze. Make sure the oil line is covered as best as possible and out of the wind. Air lock, crack the line at the furnace and run out the oil for a while, into a cup. Clogged oil filter, change the filter and check the nozzle. If the filter was clogged enough to shut down the unit, something most likely slipped by and got to the nozzle. Don't try to clean it, they are only a couple bucks.

Well, it kicked off again last night. I am having my buddy come out today to do a cleaning and service. I thought about doing it myself, but have a busy weekend (stupid boss making me work saturday!) and have never done it before so I have having my buddy who does this stuff come this afternoon.

I don't get this: When we bought the house in 2002, there was no furnace. We bought this one brand new, and my father in law installed it. At the time, I knew NOTHING about home repairs and maintanence (it was our first house) so I didn't know that it had to be cleaned every year. Last year was the first time it was ever cleaned! But, we never had a problem with it kicking off like this before. The last time it was cleaned was the end of march last year, and we didn't use it that much after that for the season.

Furnace guy just left, said that the end cone? was almost totally burnt off. Not sure what that means, but he said it wasnt good... but it only took him a few min to change it out.
