Question

Furnace in garage - clearance to garage door?

Just put a furnace in the garage on a stand (unenclosed). Direct venting to roof according to manufacturer requirements.

My question is about the number of feet required from the furnace stand, or bollards (they will be required), to the garage door. I've heard 20' and 15'... anyone know? This is in California.

Call your local inspections department. I've never encountered that situation as a mechanical code issue. Around here, as long as the equipment is protected from vehicular damage you are good to go.

Furnace in garage - clearance to garage door?

I talked to one of the inspectors for the city, but he was a bit scattered. He was saying 20' from the front of the bollards, but considering that's not possible in many garages, I think he's confused with 20' or setback limit (whichever is greater) from property line to the garage entrance.

He also said something like "there needs to be 15' for it to be considered a garage" which contradicted what he said before.

I'd rather have actual code to point to in this case. The furnace is already in and 15' from bollards would be fine, but 20' would not make for a happy day

Is this an existing garage where the furnace was relocated to, from another spot in/under the house? Why, exactly, did you just put a furnace into your garage?

Yes, it was relocated (and upgraded to 95%). Reason - House < 1000sf. Furnace monsters living in closets are unwelcome space stealers. This one happened to be taking up kitchen 'pantry' space. It's configured for direct vent and venting through roof according to manufacturers requirements.
