Furnace filter

I just had a Bryant furnace installed. There was no filter so I called the installer and he said he would install a replaceable filter on the grates to the inlet plenum. Does anybody know if this is standard procedure? Should there have been a filter holder of some type installed when I received the furnace? Are there a lot of Bryant furnaces that come with no filter and or holder?

Filters are optional equipment for many manufacturers these days. Due to the many options that are now available.
