furnace filter?

hi all,
I recently moved into a new house which has a bottom air return furnace. I was about to change the filter when i noticed there was not one in the filter space however there was a filter-like thing clamped above where the filter should go. my question is whether or not this is a filter or maybe a screen, it seems to thin to be a filter, anyways i don't know if i should remove it or not? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

furnace filter?

Age/ Brand/ Model of the furnace would help but as Jackofall suggests..A picture would be great. Does it look like the screen is there to stop a filter from being sucked into the fan?
