Question

Furnace Fan is loud...suggestions needed

I have a York Diamond 90 furnace. When the fan comes on (either using Fan On setting on thermostat or when heat comes on) is LOUD. I have determined that the main noise comes from the fan itself. What options do I have here? The fan motor is a swirlwind high performance (FASCO) unit. The manual states it is a multi-speed motor. My model number on my furnace is P2URD20N11201. It is an Upflow direct drive unit.

Can I somehow turn down the fan speed? Also, during the night my heat cycles on and off repeatedly. Maybe every 10-15 minutes. So I suspect it is too large for the house. So if I could solve that problem too I would be a happy camper.

One final note. I live at high altitude so the unit I have was oversized due to the 30% capacity hit I take at this altitude. But it still cycles on and off repeatedly. My home is 3000 sqft.

Any ideas you guys have are greatly appreciated!

Is the noise coming from the furnace or from the vents/ducts? Is this problem recent or has it always been noisy? Has the furnace been replaced since the ductwork was put in?

Hi, thanks for the reply.

The furnace blower is loud, but it also caused air to be gushing through the vents. I did change the speed for heat to low on the blower, and that helped. But the furnace room is right next to my home theater and it is really noisy.

I just bought the house 3 months ago but it has been this way since I moved in.

I don't think so, since the house was built in 1998 and the furnace manual states 1998 on the back. I believe it is original.

By changing the speed to low on the blower when the heat comes on, it eliminated a lot of the noise throughout the house, but 2 areas are still a problem. The furnance room is not finished inside (2x4's exposed) and it is loud, and the cold air returns are super loud too. Again the noise is coming mainly from the fan/blower, which is a multi-speed unit.

I would check the temp rise. To make sure it isn't too high and damages the furnace.

Sounds like the furnace needs to be mounted on some vibration insulation material (or suspended from the joists). In addition, you should put sound insulation in the wall between your furnace and home theater.
