Furnace Fan

I have a 14 year old Rheem Criterion gas furnace. The fan would only kick on about 50% of the time. When it doesn't, it makes a slight humming noise. Had the service / repair man out. He checked blower motor --draw on pulling 4.9 amp running. Start amps @ 6.8; motor rated at 6.8 amps. HE checked blower motor & wheel --turn freely. He could not get fan motor to duplicate problem. Of course, next day blower fan would not start at all.

His estimate to replace (suspect motor?) is $400. His suggestion is to look at furnace replacement with more efficient unit.

Could this problem be any sort of switch, or something other than the motor? What about the furnace replacement suggestion?

Thanks,
IKE

Furnace Fan

He has determine in my eyes that there is nothing wrong with the blower it self.
Would it be possible Ike for you to post a picture of your furnace with both doors off? That way I can see what type of fan control you have and better direct you on your next step. Thanks

No problem. I'll shoot a digital photo this evening. Is there a way to attach it and post through DIY?

Harleyrider:
What do you think about a potentially faulty capacitor to the blower motor?
