Furnace cycles rapidly, works seldomly

My gas furnace has heating elements and they will light the burners when heat is called for but they turn off after 3-4 seconds. They will light again after a minute but will again shut off after 3-4 seconds. This will repeat over and over and occasionally it will remain lit until it heats up the house. Once it reaches temp, it will go back to the short cycles the next time it calls for heat. Again, you can hear the burners for short bursts, but won't stay on. The furnace only heats the house maybe 2-3 times a day. It's driving me (and mostly my wife) crazy. The furnace was brand new last winter and the filter is a month old. My previous furnace did the same thing and I was told the heat exchange was probably bad so I put in the new one only to have the same problem this year.

Any ideas? Whatever help I can get would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The usual reason for short cycling will be a dirty flame sensor. This flame rod measures your flame and needs to be very clean to work properly. Remove it and clean it with a kitchen scrubby or steel wool.

Thank you very much. Removed and cleaned the flame sensor with a sanding block, and it has been working great. Didn't think that could get dirty in a year but I guess it can. Thanks again.

I guess you are now wondering if your last furnace only needed the same cleaning?

Definitely, but what's done is done. At least I learned a lot about installing and repair of my furnace. A friend helped me out, so it was MUCH cheaper than it could have been. Thanks again.

what is the brand and model #. if it is located in a basement laundry area keep the fabric softener sheets in a sealed container as the fumes can prematurely corrode flame sensors. ammonia from cat boxes does the same as well as a damp basement.

Wow, yeah....the furnace is in close proximity to dryer sheets and a cat box. Thanks, I will relocate ASAP.
