furanace won't kick on automatically
my 22 year old heil furnace will run fine if i manually press the up button on the programable thermostat, but it won't kick on it's own. i replaced the thermostat and it is doing the exact same thing. that makes no sense to me!

Check for a loose wire at the W or R teminal on the furnace.
Baring that you have a bad stat AGAIN, or some issues with the furnace, Is it a standing pilot or an electric ignition.

the furnace should kick on when the temperature falls 2 degrees below the set temperature, but it can drop 10 degrees below set temperature and it will not kick on until i hit the up teperature on the stat. then it runs perfect and shuts off just like it should. could it be a bad gas valve?
