Freezing up outside
Came home from work today and it was hot in the house. Recently had an issue after a low voltage situation with the power company and had to replace the capacitor(sp?) so I turned everything off and went outside to see if the compressor was running. It was but I noticed there was a big block of ice inside the compressor. Hosed off the ice. Came back in and realized the thermostat was set on 72. Checked the filter which was filthy! Changed that.

When the ac guy was here last month he checked the freon and it was fine. The compressor is about 3 years old. Any suggestions?

So what's the current problem? Did cleaning the filthy filter solve the issue? My suggestion is to properly maintain your system. (ie inside coil, outside coil and filters)

I haven't tried turning it back on yet. I wasn't sure that was such a good idea. Trying to get some advice.

Also, the outside unit is clean. Not sure where the inside coil is or how to maintain it.

If an "HVAC" tech was there last month. That air filter was probably already too dirty. Hard to check if the charge is ok or not, with a dirty air filter.

Turn it back on. And check if you have ice every 30 minutes for an hour or so. Good chance it was the dirty air filter that caused your problem.

The dirty filter was probably enough to cause it to ice. I had to replace a blower for a lady who had the same problem.
