Fireplace --vented Or Non-vented?

I'm planning to put a gas fired firerplace in our ground floor living room. Outside wall, could use direct vent. All such units at Lowes and Hd seem to be the non-vented variety. What is your take on these? Safe? Thanks--SnoBird

Hi SnoBird

My take on the gas fire places from Lowes is , you get what you pay for. I have had about ten of these things show up in my area in the last month and its made buisness good for us. The biggest complaint I am getting is they are noisy and they look cheasy. Not quite sure why they bought them if this was what they thought about them when they got them home. We sell RL Petersons and Apalachian. These things are beautiful, yes the cost is about twice that of Lowes. But once again you get what you pay for. Both the Apalchian and the R.L Peterson have mantle kits available. Check them out online before you go to Lowes and are dissapointed.

Good luck
Rusty

Let me try to answer your question...........

ANY unvented gas apliance has the potential to creat a dangerous situation in your house. When ever possible ALWAYS go vented. The ones that bring in there own combustion air I like even more, they dont reley solely on air from the dwelling to burn clean. Also look for a unit that has a blower on it so that the heat it produces can be circulated through out the area it serves.

Check your local codes. most do not permit unvented gas inserts or fireplaces.

Even if permitted, you may have a hard time selling the house in the future, especially if the codes continue to change.
