Fireplace Insert?

I am thinking about using some kind of wood burning as an alternative to oil heating I am using now. Not sure if it should be a fireplace insert just to heat the house, or even more complex system that might even heat water. Maybe somebody could give me some advice on it? E.g. speaking of fireplace inserts, how to choose the right one that would not be too expansive, but still efficient and reliable? Then I will have more specific questions.
Thank you very much in advance,

Dmitriy

You could do a pellet boiler. I'm not sure what it would do for your house's resale value, but at least you won't be spending $3.19/gallon.
Fireplace inserts need to be sized to the dimensions of your firebox. Check your local retailer to see what fits.

If you have room in a vacant corner, you may also consider a small wood stove. They are great and will heat large spaces and are usually a little less expensive.

But I guess I would need a chimney in that corner, wouldn't I?

I just bought an insert so here is a list of the one's I looked into. I ended up with the Northstar but they all looked good. From my research these are some of the best made and most efficient around.

Heatnglo Northstar ($2600 with chimney and everything needed)

CountryFlame Inglenook ( just a little more than the Northstar)

Napolean NZ6000 (real expensive, about $5000)

Kozyheat Forgot the model
