fan will not reverse

i have a american standard heat pump that i just installed in my home.its used, very used like 1999 used but was told it works.i noticed that when i swapped modes from cooling to heating my fan did not reverse.what causes it to reverse?the fan motor is a newer replacement so i was able to reverse it by swapping the reversing connectors but would love for it to do it on its own. wait isnt it suposed to reverse back on defrost?oops.it hasnt been cold yet for long so hopefully nothings broke yet.thanks

The fan motor is not suppose to reverse. The fan runs in the same direction in both heating and cooling mode. A valve inside of the heat pump reverses. Only the refrigerant flow reverses, not the fan.

when it first went into heating mode you could hear the fan trying to reverse.kinda like having one of the windings in the motor charging in reverse.the fan speed was reduced as well, intill i reversed the switch.fan speed then returned to normal but in reverse.

The fan does not reverse, if it does you have a problem. the solution is not flipping the direction. the condenser is designed as a plenum and is always supposed to have the fan blowing out.

A weak capacitor can cause the fan to spin in reverse. BUT, the fan is NOT suppose to reverse. look at the fan blades, they only cut through the air when spinning in one direction.
