Evaporator coil measurement with gas furnace

I have a Rheem gas furnace (24yrs old). It is located in a closet in hallway with the evaporator coil for my 14 yr old 3.5 ton Carrier A/C on top of it. The coil has leaked and I was told I need to replace it. I was also told that the evaporator coil is too wide(22")for over my furnace that is 17" wide. My closet is 24 " wide. I'm looking to replace the a/c and gas furnace and hopefully get a tax break too. Did the contractor put the wrong size evaporator coil 14 yrs ago? I live in Georgia. What is opinions on a/c & gas heat verses heat pump with gas heat as duel fuel? I haven't been able to get a "matched" system due to my closet size. Guurrr. Thank you for your help on this.

Duel fuel is very nice and effecient. If it saves much $ or not depends on your gas and electric rates.

24 years old. Tear it all out and replace it.
Always ask to see your contractors license!
