ERV vs. HRV?

energy recovery vent or heat recovery vent, which one would i use for my home in central MN. I need to lower the humidity in the winter.

Anybody in my region have these in ther homes?

ERV stands for energy recovery ventilator, HRV stands for heat recovery ventilator. They are both the same operating piece of equipment made by different manufacturers. In most cases there is little to no difference at all.

I thought ERV handled humidity and HRV didn't.

On another note. You want to 'lower' the humidity in winter? Winter air is incredibly dry. My house would contract into a little ball if I didn't run a power humidifier on my furnace. What is the cause of the high humidity in your home? ERV systems are generaly used for lowering the humidity in your home in the summer.

your house must leak enough to exchange the dry outside air into your home.


6 in. walls, low e windows, my house is airtight and just the everyday activities release moisture. breathing,cooking,bath,laundry,dishwasher. THere is only one differance that I can see in the two and that is an erv can transfer heat and moisture. hrv can only transfer heat. I figured more people would have these in there homes. As of two years ago they are required by code, in my region.
