Emergency Heat Light On

I live in Northern Ohio where the current temp is appx 24 degrees. I have an electric furnace and a Trane XL1200 heat pump. This morning the thermostat was showing a blue resistance heat light, as well as a solid red emergency heat light. I thought the red light only goes on if you switch the thermostat switch to emergency heat. This was not the case this morning , as the switches were in the normal modes. I threw the switch to cooling mode to see if something was stuck in the outside reversing valve, but it seemed to be OK. Eventually, the red light went out. Any idea what caused this ? Any reason for concern ? Thanks for your help.
