electric furnace not shutting off

I have an electric furnace. I have the thermostat in the Auto position at 70 degrees. the furnace keeps pumping out hot air at 75 degrees. I put the thermostat in the "off" position and the furnace keeps going.

Is this a thermostat issue or something else??

unless someone been crawling around all over where your tstat wires run (attic) lately, its more than likely a problem in the furnace its self is this a heat pump, or straight electric heat ?digital tstat or standard tstat any work been done to it lately? if so what?
also when you put it in off position how long are you waiting before you say its not shutting off? does the air ever cool off or always warm?

Is is a standard electric furnace. We wait 7-10 minutes and it still does not turn off unless we turn off the breakers. Nothing has tampered with the thermostat.

The next step???

I'd say you have a short in the thermostat wiring.

well its one of a couple of things not knowing your ability with things electricial the only thing i could suggest would be ,with the breakers off disconnect the thermostat by that i mean pull the wires off the terminals at the tstat turn the breakers back on if it continues to run the problem is in the furnace one of the sequencers is stuck.if it shuts off than go get a tstat if it dosent, call a professional, i say this because to determine if its the sequencer the diagnoses must be done with power turned on(thats how i would do it others may have other suggestions) and i cant in good conscience advise you to go rooting around where there is 220volts its a major electrocution hazard....sorry

99% of the time its the sequencer that will need replaced, the contacts are sticking. For the time being you can give the side of your furnace a good smack and that might shut it off ..lol
