Dumb Question

My home has hot water baseboard heat.

What is the name of the thing in the basement that sucks large quantities of NG all winter to provide said hot water?

Not trying to be stupid; just don't want to bias the answers. A few guys in the office were talking and our answers didn't agree.

Conversely, if a home is heated with hot air blown through registers, then what is the thing called?

A lunch is riding on the consensus answer from this site!

Thanks.

- Hot water boiler
- Furnace

Now you have to buy HVACDAVE lunch.

Any dissenting opinions, or does everyone agree w/ Dave's answer?

Is there supposed to be a different answer to this trick question, because there is only one answer to the question. Boiler, Furnace are pretty much the same objects, and can do different things, depending on the purpose.

There was in my office.

Boilers heat water/steam.

Furnaces heat air.

Come on guys, did you buy the lunch yet! When I lived in the Pacific Northwest I had one of those "gas sucking things" in my basement and we were always at battle. They will warm your house but its costly keeping that going! The word your looking for is a "Hydronics"system. Its a system that is a hot source of heat that utilizes a gas or oil and sometimes electric sorce to heat the water up and circulate to radiaters in the home. Its a pain in the a---systembut will do the job for you.

In simpler terms Boiler/Furnace.

Geo water to water systems are hydronic systems. But they have no boiler.

Still falls into the Airhandler/Furnace category; regardless if it uses fuel source, or transference of heat through coils.

HVACDave posted the correct answer 4 minutes after the OP posed the question:

- Hot water boiler
- Furnace

Its funny,In the short amount of time Ive been trying to help people out its funny how around the country theres different names for different systems. Its wierd because of the way that people look at it and the way they are diagnosed.Ive learned from a few people and its different posting on this site and still trying to visualize whats going on with the problems they are having. In any case ill just keep trucking on and do my best to do what I do best.I thank the people that post on here.I think you no who the sincere ones are that try to make a difference.,
