Dumb HVAC question...

Ok forgive my ignorance. I have a stupid question. I am going to put AC in my garage, but am just curious if there are any type of AC units that are not split systems? In other words, instead of having the air handler in the attic of my garage, is there a type of unit that would be all oustide of the garage? If so, are there any pros/cons of this as opposed to the usual method of having the air handler in the attic? I'm in Houston by the way.

Thanks.

Here in the midwest they're called 'package units'. The air handler and evaporator is in the same unit as the compressor/condenser, which sits outside the structure and is connected to the duct trunk by a plennum. These are typically joined to a duct trunk that runs under the floor in the crawlspace or basement, but I guess it could come into a garage too.

The ones I know of are also heat pumps, which may not be in demand in Houston, but to answer your question, yes there are 'all-in-one' units.

Good Luck.

Dumb HVAC question...

Thanks...I am in houston where we have slabs...so there is no way to run it under the floor. I am just trying to avoid putting one in my attic if I can. But I wouldn't know how to get the ducting into the garage since we can't go under that floor...any ideas? My garage is 30x60 and the back of it is just siding. Thanks for any ideas.

30X60 garage there!...how about the stand up typical air handler right on the floor in the corner and the condenser right outside.then run the discharge duct just up in tin to the attic, and flex it out to the registers across the garage attic ceiling.another option... ductless installs with the evaporator section that can mount in the ceiling and pipe the single condenser over to each coil

Dumb HVAC question...

I live in virginia and I have installed a few split systems that have the condenser outside and the air conditioning unit looks like a window unit and mounts between to studs. This blows the air directly from the indoor unit just like a window unit. Thermostat controlled etc also the electric is ran outside and all connected to outdoor unit. If interested let me know and will send you a web site. This is still a split system just a little different variation.

In my garage I installed a GE Zoneline packaged terminal unit (like you often see under the window in a hotel room). Heat pump, air conditioning, remote thermostat - all in one unit. I framed a opening in the wall (up high, not at the floor) similar to what would be done for a window, mounted the metal shroud in the hole, slid the unit into the shroud - mechanical done. A 20 amp 220v circuit nearby, run the thermostat wire to the other side of the room. Done - easy - works great.

It will comforably and readily heat and cool my 550 sq ft garage. SoCal, where the summer days easly can hit 100 degrees, and winter nights occationally see freezing temps. This with the 16' uninsulated garage door in one wall, and R13 in the other walls and ~R20 in the ceiling.

About $1000 for the unit, GFCI power cord, and thermostat.

Look into a Fujitsu Ductless Mini-Split. Highest efficiency, low noise, small size, easy installation...
