Ductwork not in use

Hi
What's the best way to deal with old ducts and vents? We installed a ductless mini split, so the old oil furnace will be removed. We want to leave the ductwork in place until we get through a couple cold winters. Should we seal off the floor registers and if so, what's best?

Where do your ducts run, cellar space? Is it cold in the cellar? What is the climate like where you live?

If the old heater is gone why leave the ducts in place, they need to go and the old registers holes need to be filled in. There going to just cold air in.

Apparently, they want to make sure the heat pumps are adequate in the coldest weather.

Thanks for your replies. Yes, the ductwork is in the unheated crawl space/cellar. We might need to install a backup system next year if the heat pump is not enough during cold weather so don't want to remove the ducts yet. In the Puget Sound area north of Seattle we sometimes have a week or two below freezing.

I don't know if I would truly seal them off until you are sure you are done with them. You might get mold growth in them if moisture gets too high. I doubt that you will save very much unless the ducts are grossly leaking, though I do understand your desire to cut leaks.

How many HP mini-splits do you have? Are they the most common, high wall mount units? I found that heating with mine, they tend to become good ceiling heaters as the fan speed drops to minimum. If there is a ceiling fan in that room that fixes it. So does manually increasing the blower speed outside of the automatic setting. I don't need much heat where I live.
