Ducting question

Hello, I'm remodeling my basement and have a 8x12 duct running right down the middle of the room splitting the room in two. I'm wanting to somehow replace this 8x12 and give myself more ceiling height. This is on a forced air furnace and this duct supplies 6 registers: 2 for the basement, and 4 upstairs.

What are my options? I really would rather not re route everything to the outside walls if I can help it.

The furnace is right behind that closed door.

Ducting question

A 6X16 would give almost the same air flow.

keep the 4 supplie to upstairs on it and one supply for the basement. then run a separate supply from the furnace plenum to the wall if you need more heat then the one register off the duct gives.
