Ducanes fires up goes out

My Ducane furnace ignites the pilot and fires up the four gas chambers. The flame stays on for 3-4 seconds and shuts off. Of course the motor for the fan has not had a chance to come on yet. The gas ignitor/burners continue to cycle on and off this way. This is while set on Auto. Now when I turn the thermostat to Fan, the blowers work and it is blowing out air and the pilot ignites the gas burners and it stays on for 3 seconds, and then shuts off. Just like it does on Auto. It seems as if all aspects of the furnace work but something is not communicating. It doesn't seem as if any limit switch would know to shut the burners off in as little as three seconds? Does anyone have an idea?

If it is an older Ducane with a Honeywell Smart Valve SV**** best to call a servicetech. The newer Ducanes have a flame sensor which sits in front of one of the burners and you can remove and clean it (not easy to get at) with fine emory paper. Should look like this one:

Most of the time it is hard to determine the age without having the model and serial number posted.
So, it should have a flame sensor, remove it, clean it with emery cloth, steel wool or fine sand paper. Wipe it clean with a cotton cloth and don't touch it (the rod) with your fingers after you clean it due to the oils on your hands will contaminate it. Reinstall and wow it works

Good luck

I used to install them and in about 2005 they went with the better independant flame sensor and ditched the troublesome Smartvalve system. If the gas valve says SV8500 M or H that unit does not have a flame sensor which can be cleaned without breaking the HSI.

There was nothing smart or good about the "idiot" valve. Rheem has a nice spark ignition.
