Does Register Size Matter?

I'm replacing the suspended ceiling in my basement with drywall. When I had heating and air added to this area the guys put one 24 X 24" air duct reguster in the ceiling. Do I need to stay with this size or is it ok to put in a smaller register? I'm a little concernce with air volume since this is the only register in the room.

Is this a supply register? what size is the duct it is attached to?

I hate drywall ceiling in basements.

lots of water damage can occur.

The duct is one of those flexible spring things with insulation on the outside. The inside of the duct measures 6" across.

6x14 if it's a return and 4x 10 if it's a supply is plenty big.

Is using 2ftx2ft registers with 6" flex in a drywall ceiling common there or what's the reasoning why you would leave such a large diffuser?

It was originally 2 X 2 because it fit in a suspended ceiling grid. I'll be replacing it with a normal size. The ceiling is still open so I can add any type of bracing that is necessary. Marty, thanks for the confirmation that this will work.
