Does this design make sense?

I have a design question but first a little background.

I've never been happy with the cooling ability of my first floor unit (Rheem 2-ton, 10 seer for ~1500 sqft). I just replaced the coil of the second floor unit (same specs). In addition, I'd like to finish my basement which is ~900 sqft- daylight, walkout to the rear. It is dry. No moisture problems.

Since my first floor system may need repairs and the basement has no system at all, I'd like to kill 2 birds with one stone. Does it make sense to get a 3-4 ton system and use thermostatically controlled dampers to service both areas? It seems like I could save a few thousand dollars by doing that instead of purchasing 2 separate units.

Thoughts? Comments? Am I missing something?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have a heat loss/gain done for the area and you might find that a 2 1/2 ton may do the both spaces (1st flr-basement)just fine.

Thanks. So I guess it's a reasonable idea for taking care of both floors.
