Do I really need the air handler filter?

I just purchased a 9 year old 2,500 sq ft single level house here in Florida.

The split HVAC system (non-heat pump) consists of an outside mounted Trane air cond. unit with an inside horizontaly mounted Trane air handler with an electric furnace mounted up on the garage ceiling.

There are 3 air filters to this system. One filter is in the return duct in the hallway ceiling, a smaller return duct filter is mounted in the master bedroom ceiling, and a 3rd filter in the air handler itself.

The filter in the air handler is missing. Must have been removed by the previous owner.

Since all the air entering the air handler is first going through the 2 filters in the house prior to going into the air handler, why would anyone need that 3rd filter that's in the air handler anyway? (now missing in my system)

I was just wondering if I should go buy that filter that's missing.

Seems like having that 3rd filter would just restrict airflow somewhat since the air first has to pass through the filters in the house before going into the air handler.

Any comments?

Thank's,
Ron

Filter at air handler is not needed in your set up.
