do CARs have to be sheet metaled?

Was gonna use a 6x6 joist bay to get cold air from one side of the house to the other, and was going to nail and caulk blocking to the top plate of the wall that the joists sit on. Is this acceptable?

Not really. Will tend to dry out the wood. And could cause sweating when the A/C first turns on.

I forgot to mention that it's the ceiling between 1st floor/2nd floor, so both sides are conditioned if that makes any difference. I do have carriage bolts and electrical to worry about, and would prefer not to put in a soffit (7 foot high ceilings) or try to go down the exterior walls (2x6 walls faced with 3/4 pine beadboard on both sides and fireblocking, old house).

It will most likely cause condensation on the ceiling and floor.
