Diverting HVAC to basement with flap or damper type device?

I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this or if it's even a good idea. I have 12x18 inch ducts along the ceiling of my basement which feed only my first floor. I was thinking about tapping them to get heating and ac down there. I want to completely shut it off from going to the first floor, while I send it to the basement and then completely shut it off from the basement when I send it to the first floor. I was considering just cutting out a large square for the return and one as a large register. Then leaving a flap in there that I could manually open and close.

The basement is about 60% the size of the first floor. Would the extra back pressure damage anything? Should I allow some air to pass by the device?

What would you suggest to use for the diverter device? I can do a hinged flap that lays on the bottom and I stand it up. Or a square damper that I could connect to a knob and use like a damper or throttle body. Please tell me if I'm an idiot or if it sounds like it could work. Thanks so much for any help.

you might want to install an automatic controlled damper normally open in the trunk then 2 or 3 auto dampers on the truck itself in the normally closed dampers as supplies for the basement. 24Vs with a stat and they swing 100% opposite when you want the hvac to do the basement only thing no matter what you do the stat is up on the first floor and not going to cycle the cooling or heating down there except for the basement stat for the damper controls swing.then the return has to be in the basemet also for the uinit things to consider...

These are only going to be in the trunk which is 12x18. I was thinking manual might be better so I don't have to tear apart the soffit when it fails.
